From Reporting Translation to Treatment Plans: How One Patient Uses AI to Individualize Care
AI transforms healthcare by personalizing treatment plans and enhancing patient-provider communication, revolutionizing how we approach medical care.
At the 2025 North American Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (NANETS) Symposium, Burt Rosen, director of Marketing Innovations for Oregon State University and patient with advanced pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor (PNET) and renal clear cell carcinoma (RCCC), hosted a session entitled AI from the Patient Perspective.
Rosen, who began using AI, specifically ChatGPT, in March 2024, views it as a huge positive with revolutionary potential, particularly in healthcare. Rosen now uses AI extensively for various tasks, including translating complex reporting into plain English, performing trending work, correlating symptoms with treatments, and combining data sets. A significant application is in integrative oncology, where AI has helped him build treatment plans aligning conventional neuroendocrine treatments with integrative approaches.
Rosen's excitement about AI stems from the ability to move beyond population health theories to deliver truly individualized treatment. Rosen envisions a future where AI fully understands a person's entire profile—including diet, lifestyle, stress, diagnoses, and test results—to create highly personalized care.
From a patient's perspective, Rosen advocates for greater transparency and curiosity from providers. He want providers to know that he uses AI and suggests clinicians should regularly ask patients, "Do you use AI? How are you using it?"
