New Conditioning Regimens May Prevent Blood Cancer Relapses

Patients with hematologic malignancies who receive a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) still risk treatment failure through relapse. As part of a conditioning regimen prior to allogenic HSCT, strategies are emerging to improve HSCT outcomes by reducing the risk of relapse. Several of these conditioning regimens were reviewed during a satellite symposium to the 2017 BMT Tandem Meetings.

Acalabrutinib Shows Promise in Ibrutinib-Intolerant CLL/SLL

According to recent study findings, the investigational BTK inhibitor acalabrutinib was shown to be well-tolerated and effective in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and small lymphocytic leukemia (SLL) who display intolerance to ibrutinib (Imbruvica).

Data from a prospective assessment of minimal residual disease from the phase III CASTOR and POLLUX studies demonstrated at least a 3-fold increase in conversion to negative MRD status with the addition of daratumumab (Darzalex) to standard-of-care regimens in the treatment of patients with relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma.

Second-line treatment of metastatic pancreatic cancer, after first-line treatment with nab-paclitaxel plus gemcitabine or gemcitabine alone, is feasible and may improve outcomes, according to a post-hoc analysis of the phase 3 MPACT trial presented at the 2016 Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium.
